Home Insurance Cost of Inspection

Home Insurance Cost of Inspection

US insurance carriers attribute much of the cost of home insurance to the required inspection programs for risk management purposes. Many insurance underwriters have some difficulty measuring the ROI of these kind of inspection programs, but it's likely that it's break-even or negative in many cases. Still, these programs are universally considered to be a necessity.

The savings from finding one bad property are large, so they tend to use this fact to justify the cost of inspection programs. The value of quality inspection on a real risk is clear, but the programs would be much more efficient if underwriters could find a way of singling out which properties are the highest risks and prioritizing the inspections based on this criteria. Today, many property and casualty underwriters are trying to incorporate some form of analytics into their approach to inspections.
