When you use Window’s Encrypting File System (AKA EFS) to encrypt sensitive information on your computer, you run the risk of losing access to that data if anything ever happens to your EFS certificate. That’s why it’s important to create a backup copy of your recovery certificate and keep it in a safe place.

There are two ways to backup your recovery certificate: The first method, using the certificate export wizard, applies to all versions of Windows Vista. The second option, if you have Windows Vista Ultimate, is to backup your recovery certificate to your digital locker using Secure Online Key Backup - one of the more useful Windows Ultimate Extras.

Using Certificate Export Wizard (All versions of Windows Vista):

1. Click the Start button, type certmgr.msc into the Search box, and hit Enter.
2. Expand the Personal folder, and click on Certificates
3. Find all certificates that have their “Intended Purpose” listed as Encrypting File System (Most likely there will only be one certificate with this purpose.)
